The Tissue Culture Facility at BRI provides a shared resource with instrumentation and expertise to support the establishment and maintenance of cell cultures as in vitro models. The TCF is comprised of two shared laboratory spaces that are maintained exclusively for cell culture work. They are equipped with four biological safety cabinets class II, tissue culture incubators, inverted microscopes to visualize the cells, centrifuge, water baths, and refrigerator/freezer. The TCF is used for culturing primary cells, such as human umbilical cord cells, human and mouse cell lines, as well as mouse stem cells. BRI’s TCF maintains high standards and has the capability and expertise to respond to the rapidly changing in vitro research. It exists primarily to fulfill BRI researchers’ cell culture and related requirements, however, the facility may be used by anyone at the University of Ioannina or other institutions. The biological cabinets are available to users by reserving time on the tissue culture calendar. All cell lines are frequently tested for mycoplasma. Cell cryopreservation and storage is also performed and may be provided. Prevention and Maintenance procedures are followed according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
